Unexpected Guests? Impromptu Thermomix Dinner Party Time!
In Episode 144, we plan out what to serve for an impromptu Thermomix dinner party. You didn’t know they were coming, but now they are, and you have to leap into action! Heck, we didn’t even go to the shops for this issue, and the fridge was bare! We have got you covered. This podcast ties in with the May issue of The 4 Blades Magazine: The Dinner Party Issue!
We LOVE to entertain and sometimes we find ourselves with extras for dinner (which we also love, by the way!) that we weren’t planning on. Can you relate? In this episode we explored what could be created for an impromptu Thermomix dinner party. With all the public holidays recently our shopping routine was all out of whack which meant the cupboard, the fridge and the freezer were all pretty bare. The challenge this week was to create a great dinner party with what little we had:
Recipe 1 – Flat Breads with Moroccan Carrot Dip
When guests arrive we love to have something out that they can snack on. We use our grain free pizza bases as flat breads and either serve them with dip or cook them with dip on top. You can also use your favourite pizza base if you prefer!
Tip: What have you got in the fridge or the cupboard that you can use for a dip? Have you got nuts and herbs to make a pesto? Carrots and spices, capsicum, sun-dried tomatoes, jars of roast capsicum or chickpeas… One word… Hummus. (Why are Bec and Joe giggling when we say this? Recipe 2 – Caramelised Onion and Roast Vegetable Quiche
While we were baking the carrots for the dip above we also threw in what veggies we had in the crisper to roast. Roast veggies are a great addition to any meal! We had some pumpkin and zucchini.
Before caramelising the onions we made the grain free tart shell from The Dinners Issue. As an alternative, you can use the shortcrust pastry recipe we discussed in Episode 110 of the podcast, when we interviewed Sophia the Thermomix baking blogger… or simply buy some shortcrust pastry! We rolled out our tart shells and blind baked them.
We have often heard that you can’t use a Thermomix to caramelise onions… Well friends, we want to tell you that you CAN indeed cook caramelised onions in your Thermomix and they really lift the common quiche. We got the Thermomix to work. The best thing about this is that you don’t need to stand there for ages while your onions cook down, the drawback is that it does take quite a while (30 minutes).
We then laid caramelised onions on the base and topped them with roast vegetables, before filling them with an egg mixture (10 eggs + 100g milk, Speed 6 / 10 seconds). We baked them for about 30 minutes at 180C, or until they didn’t have a ‘wobble’ anymore. This made two quiches and they are absolutely delicious.
Recipe 3 – Chunky Thermomix Potato Bake
We needed an easy side dish. Bec was thinking about potato bake and wondered if it would matter if the potatoes were sliced or diced. Every potato bake we’ve ever had has had sliced potato. Turns out diced potato bake is delicious! This is a delightful side dish to go with the above quiches and ever so simple to make.
Recipe 4 – Choc Banana Nice Cream
As you will hear in the show, we had a LOT of frozen bananas. So we thought why not go the delicious Choc Banana Nice Cream from our interview with Yummy Goodness owner Hayley Abell in Episode 143 of the podcast. To make this a real dinner party treat you could serve this with bowls of crushed nuts, cacao, seeds or any other toppings that you love and your guests can make their own creations.
